What goes in a builders skip
Renovation and building waste, in a mixed builders skip. Companies name it differently: ASAP Bin Hire calls it commercial waste, “all general waste as well as concrete, soil, bricks, plaster board, and tiles”.
Goes in
- Plasterboard, render and tiles
- Timber framing, offcuts and floorboards
- Old kitchen and laundry cabinets, vanities and doors
- Carpet, packaging and cardboard
Never goes in
- Asbestos: it must go to a site authorised by EPA Victoria, and Asbestos in Victoria says removal “is best performed by licensed asbestos removalists”. If you find sheeting you’re unsure of, stop and get it checked.
- Paint, chemicals and liquids
- Gas bottles
Weight decides the size
Renovation waste is heavier than it looks once tiles, render and plaster go in. Yarra Valley Skip Bins publishes heavy mixed-load limits of 1.3 tonnes for 4 m³, 1.5 for 6 m³ and 1.8 for 8 m³, and charges extra above them.
- 3 or 4 m³A bathroom strip-out (heavy if it’s fully tiled)
- 4 to 6 m³A kitchen renovation
- 8 or 10 m³An extension or a full renovation, or several skips
Our rule of thumb. If most of it is concrete, brick or soil on its own, a single-material skip is cheaper: see soil and concrete skips.
Where it goes, and who’s responsible
EPA Victoria puts a duty on whoever hires the skip, not just the skip company.
- “Most construction and demolition waste is industrial waste”, and it “must be taken to a place authorised to receive it”, including waste in a skip.
- ”If you hire a skip bin or waste removal contractor, it’s your responsibility to know the contractor is taking your waste to a place authorised to accept it.”
- After a May 2026 blitz on operators who dump waste, EPA said to make sure a contractor “can provide a docket showing it was taken to a lawful place”. We’ll give you the docket on request.
Permits on a building site
On the property, none. On the road, the skip company applies: Yarra Ranges has a building-site permit of $150.00 for up to 3 months, and its asset protection sign-off checks that “The nature strip has been cleared of skip bin(s), building materials and debris”. See council skip permits.

Neither states whether GST is included. Checked 1 October 2026.

Common questions
How long can I keep the skip?
We confirm the hire period with the price. Published standard hires in the east are mostly 3 or 4 days: Yarra Valley Skip Bins lists a standard 3-day hire, and M Tucker & Sons includes 3 days and charges $25.00 for each day beyond.
What if I overfill it?
Fill it level with the top edge. An overfilled skip can’t be transported: M Tucker & Sons, for one, charges a $110.00 return fee when that happens.
