What goes in a green waste skip
Garden material only. A skip of only green waste is often priced lower than a mixed load: Yarra Valley Skip Bins, for one, publishes $495 for 4 m³ of 100% green waste or timber, against $595 for a 4 m³ light mixed load.

- Prunings, hedge trimmings and branches
- Leaves, lawn clippings and weeds
- Shrubs and plants you’ve dug out
- Untreated timber, where the company counts it as green
Tell us first, or keep out
- Soil, rocks, pavers, pots: they make it a mixed load, which costs more
- Stumps: heavy and full of soil, so they can push it over its weight limit
- Palm fronds and bamboo: some take them, but the Whitehorse Recycling and Waste Centre won’t count them as clean green
- Treated sleepers, plastic edging, rubbish: not green waste
Which size for a garden job
Garden waste is bulky but light, so size by volume. Cut long branches to lie flat, stamp hedge trimmings down as you go, and keep it level with the top edge.

Green waste prices: skip or tip run
For one trailer load, a transfer station can be cheaper if you have the trailer and the time. For a bigger clean-up, a skip saves the trips. Small amounts can go out with council collections: Manningham lets you book up to two hard rubbish or bundled branches collections a year, and Yarra Ranges collects bundled branches twice a year.

Gate prices from 1 July 2026, as each station publishes them, GST included. Whitehorse accepts only unpainted, untreated timber with its green waste, and no palm or bamboo. Checked 1 October 2026.
Common questions
How long can I keep the skip?
We confirm the hire period with the price. Published standard hires in the east are mostly 3 or 4 days: Yarra Valley Skip Bins lists a standard 3-day hire, and M Tucker & Sons includes 3 days and charges $25.00 for each day beyond.
Can the skip go on the street?
Only with a council permit, and the skip company applies for it, so we arrange it when the skip can’t fit on your property. On your driveway, no permit is needed. See council skip permits.
