What goes in a general waste skip

Furniture, boxes, clothes, toys, books, old carpet and underlay, broken outdoor settings and timber offcuts: what builds up in a garage or a house. Companies draw the line a little differently (ASAP Bin Hire, for one, keeps glass, bricks, dirt, concrete, sand and tiles out of its general waste), so tell us what’s going in.

Goes in

  • Furniture, beds and shelving
  • Boxes, books, clothes and toys
  • Carpet, underlay and curtains
  • Outdoor settings and timber offcuts

Costs extra or stays out

  • Mattresses: extra, such as $100 each at Yarra Valley Skip Bins or $50 at ASAP Bin Hire
  • Tyres: extra, and whole tyres can’t go to landfill
  • TVs, appliances, anything with a battery: e-waste, banned from landfill in Victoria since 2019
  • Paint, chemicals, gas bottles, liquids: never

Where those go instead, much of it free: what can go in a skip.

Which size for a clean-out

Our rule of thumb, by the job. Furniture takes more room than it seems, so take legs off tables, flatten boxes and load flat pieces first.

  • 2 or 3 m³A spare room or a small shed
  • 4 to 6 m³A garage, or a shed full of furniture
  • 8 m³ +A whole house before a sale or a move

Weight still counts: Yarra Valley Skip Bins publishes light-load limits of 1.0 tonne for 4 m³, 1.2 for 6 m³ and 1.5 for 8 m³, and moves an overweight light load to its heavy price. A stack of old pavers or a box of tiles can tip a clean-out over, so mention anything heavy. Compare every size.

Each row is one company’s published price, not ours. Yarra Valley Skip Bins includes a standard 3-day hire and moves an overweight light load to its heavy price; ASAP Bin Hire’s general waste excludes glass, bricks, dirt, concrete, sand and tiles, and its page shows a second, slightly higher price guide. Neither states whether GST is included. Council permits are extra. Checked 1 October 2026.

Moving house and deceased estates

A skip on the driveway for a week lets you sort as you go, keep what matters and fill it in your own time. On a shared driveway or in a body corporate, check where it can sit first. For a few bulky items, council hard rubbish may be enough: most councils in the east offer two booked collections a year.

Common questions

How long can I keep the skip?

We confirm the hire period with the price. Published standard hires in the east are mostly 3 or 4 days: Yarra Valley Skip Bins lists a standard 3-day hire, and M Tucker & Sons includes 3 days and charges $25.00 for each day beyond.

Can the skip go on the street?

Only with a council permit, and the skip company applies for it, so we arrange it when the skip can’t fit on your property. On your driveway, no permit is needed. See council skip permits.

What if I overfill it?

Fill it level with the top edge. An overfilled skip can’t be transported: M Tucker & Sons, for one, charges a $110.00 return fee when that happens.
