Box Hill took its name in 1861 from Box Hill in Surrey, England, suggested by the local postmaster. Eastern Skip Hire delivers skips across Box Hill, from the apartments and townhouses around the centre to the older streets between Elgar and Middleborough roads.
With so many apartments and townhouses, the first question for a skip in Box Hill is where it can sit. Box Hill shares the 3128 postcode with Box Hill South, also in Whitehorse.
A skip on the street in Box Hill
On your driveway, no permit is needed. On the road or nature strip, the City of Whitehorse wants a permit first, and the skip company applies for it, so we arrange it when the skip can’t fit on your property.
- Never on the nature strip
Whitehorse
Whitehorse says a skip must not be placed on the nature strip or grass reserve. The skip contractor applies, at least 48 business hours ahead.
Fee: $125.00 for 5 days, plus $51 per bay per day in a metered bay
Every council’s rule side by side: skip bin permits in Melbourne’s east.
Box Hill homes: apartments, rentals and move-outs
Box Hill is apartment country, by the 2021 Census.
- 53.1%of occupied homes are flats or apartments (Victoria: 12.1%)
- 57.9%are rented (Victoria: 28.5%)
- 51.1%have two bedrooms
In a block of six or more homes, Whitehorse says to check with the body corporate first, as some have their own hard waste collections. For a move-out, a fit-out or a townhouse renovation, a 2 or 3 m³ mini skip usually does it: ask the building manager whether it can sit in the car park or on the shared driveway.
Under the Suburban Rail Loop plans, the Box Hill precinct zone took effect on 14 July 2026, and Victoria’s Big Build says tunnelling towards Box Hill starts in 2027.
Where a skip can go in Box Hill
On private land it needs no permit. On the street, Whitehorse’s rules are tight, and parking is scarce.
- Footpath: a clear 1.8 m from the property line and 0.5 m from the kerb must be kept at all times, so on most footpaths the skip goes on the road or your own land.
- Metered bays: Whitehorse charges $51 (ex GST) per bay per day on top of the permit.
- Clearways: a skip permit doesn’t override a clearway or other parking restriction.
- Building sites: a valid Works Zone permit lets the skip sit in the works zone at no extra charge.
Whitehorse says parking is in high demand around the Box Hill Hospital precinct and the shopping and commercial streets, so a spot off the road is worth finding first.
Trees: a different rule in the rail loop precinct
Broad tree overlays cover only about 3% of Box Hill’s homes, by our count of Vicmap addresses.
About 87% of homes are in the Suburban Rail Loop precinct zone, which the state-wide canopy rule below doesn’t list. Individually listed significant trees, heritage places such as the Box Hill Cemetery, and the Gardiners Creek corridor still have their own controls, so check VicPlan or ask Whitehorse before removing a tree.
Outside the precinct zone, a state-wide rule applies. In most residential zones (not Low Density Residential), Clause 52.37 needs a permit to remove, destroy or lop a canopy tree at least 5 m tall with a canopy averaging at least 4 m across. On a block with a house, that narrows to trees with any part of the trunk within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. A dead tree is exempt. Look up your block on VicPlan, or ask the council, before you cut.

Common questions
Where’s the tip for Box Hill residents?
Whitehorse’s own Recycling and Waste Centre, on the corner of Burwood Highway and Morack Road, Vermont South, about 6 km from Box Hill’s edge in a straight line, by our measure. It’s open seven days, 6:30am to 4pm. Whitehorse sends building and renovation rubble, fence panels, pallets and concrete there, as hard waste won’t take them.
