Kilsyth grew up along Mount Dandenong Road, the old route from Croydon station into the Dandenong Ranges, among orchards on the foothills. Eastern Skip Hire delivers skips across Kilsyth, to its family homes in the north and the factories and workshops in its industrial south.
Kilsyth sits under two councils, so the rules for a skip on the street, hard rubbish and cutting down trees depend on which side of the line your street is. The council section below shows where the line runs.
A skip on the street in Kilsyth
On your driveway, no permit is needed. On the road or nature strip, the Shire of Yarra Ranges and the City of Maroondah each want a permit first, and the skip company applies for it, so we arrange it when the skip can’t fit on your property.
- Driveway first, if it’s safe
Yarra Ranges
Council will not approve a road permit where the skip can be placed safely on private property. A registered skip company applies.
Fee: $74.00 residential (up to 7 days), $150.00 building site (up to 3 months), $500.00 commercial (3 to 12 months), including GST
- Road or nature strip: permit
Maroondah
A permit is needed for a skip on council land, including the nature strip and road. The bin hire company applies, and must be accredited with council.
Fee: $118 for 1 to 3 days, $188.50 for 4 to 8 days, $253 for 9 to 14 days, per bin (2026–27)
Kilsyth is split between two councils. Most of it is in the Shire of Yarra Ranges. A strip along the western side next to Croydon, west of Glen Dhu Road and Colchester Road, is in the City of Maroondah: streets such as Landstrom Quadrant, Byron Road, Tennyson Avenue, Browning Street and Churchill Way, and the west side of Colchester Road. By our count of Vicmap addresses, that’s about 15% of Kilsyth’s homes. Your rates notice or VicPlan shows your council, and if the skip has to go on the road, we arrange that council’s permit.
Every council’s rule side by side: skip bin permits in Melbourne’s east.
Kilsyth homes and workshops
Mostly three-bedroom family houses, by the 2021 Census, with a large industrial area beside them.
- 84.7%of occupied homes are separate houses
- 54.1%of homes have three bedrooms
- 14.1%are townhouses, units or semi-detached
Kilsyth grew from about 1,500 people in the 1950s to more than 10,000 by 1994, so most of its houses date from the post-war decades on.
About 18% of Kilsyth’s land is zoned for industry, by our count of Vicmap planning data. We deliver skips to workshops and factory clean-outs as well as homes: tell us the waste and the access, and we’ll suggest the size.
Garden clean-ups: the tree rule changes at the council line
Most Kilsyth homes are under a landscape overlay that needs a permit to cut down bigger trees, and each council sets a different size.
- Yarra Ranges side: Schedule 23 of the Significant Landscape Overlay covers about 90% of homes, by our count of Vicmap addresses. A permit is needed to “remove, destroy or lop” a tree more than 0.26 m across at 1.3 m above the ground. Dead vegetation, a tree whose base is within 2 m of a building, and listed environmental weeds are exempt.
- Maroondah side: Schedule 4 covers about 84% of homes on the Maroondah side, by our count of Vicmap addresses. A permit is needed to “remove, destroy or lop vegetation”, except a tree under 5 m tall with a single trunk less than 0.5 m round at 1 m above the ground. A tree that’s dead, dying or declared dangerous by a suitably qualified person, and one within 3 m of the house, are exempt.
A state-wide rule applies on top of that. In most residential zones (not Low Density Residential), Clause 52.37 needs a permit to remove, destroy or lop a canopy tree at least 5 m tall with a canopy averaging at least 4 m across. On a block with a house, that narrows to trees with any part of the trunk within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. A dead tree is exempt. Look up your block on VicPlan, or ask the council, before you cut.

Common questions
What’s the nearest tip to Kilsyth?
The Montrose Transfer Station, at 69–71 Canterbury Road, Montrose, about 200 m past Kilsyth’s eastern edge in a straight line, by our measure. Both Yarra Ranges and Maroondah list it for their residents. It’s privately run, so check its hours and what it takes before you go.
Does council hard rubbish work the same across Kilsyth?
No. On the Yarra Ranges side it’s one street collection a year, between late January and the end of March, and it can’t be booked. On the Maroondah side you book it, up to two collections a financial year, and it excludes decking, fencing and building waste. Those are skip jobs on either side.
