Clayton is named after Clayton Vale, a property near the station owned by John Clayton in the 1860s and 70s. Eastern Skip Hire collects enquiries about skip hire across Clayton, from the townhouses and share houses near the station to the streets around Monash University.
Clayton shares the 3168 postcode with Notting Hill, also in Monash. Just to the south, Clayton South and Clarinda are in Kingston, with a different permit for a skip on the road.
A skip on the street in Clayton
On your driveway, no permit is needed. On the road or nature strip, the City of Monash wants a permit first, and the skip company applies for it, so the skip supplier arranges it when the skip can’t fit on your property.
- Highest fee in the east
Monash
An accredited supplier applies at least 2 days ahead. Skips aren’t allowed on arterial roads.
Fee: $327.60 on local roads (1 week max.), or $331.80 at activity and shopping centres (2 hours, 7am to 9am) (2026–27)
Every council’s rule side by side: skip bin permits in Melbourne’s east.
What council hard rubbish takes, and what it won’t: Monash hard rubbish.
Clayton homes: share houses and move-outs
Six in ten Clayton homes are rented, and one household in five is a group household, by the 2021 Census.
- 60.7%of occupied homes are rented (Victoria: 28.5%)
- 20.5%of households are group households (Victoria: 4.0%)
- 42.5%are townhouses, row houses or semi-detached (Victoria: 13.9%)
A share-house move-out or an end-of-lease clean-out usually suits a 2 or 3 m³ mini skip on the driveway. Monash runs a Clayton program, with funding support from Monash University, that asks residents to keep the nature strip clear of dumped rubbish, and a skip on your own land does exactly that.
Work on Clayton’s underground Suburban Rail Loop station is under way beside the elevated station; Victoria’s Big Build expects excavation of the site to finish in 2027.
Trees: a different rule in the rail loop precinct
About 89% of Clayton’s addresses are in the Suburban Rail Loop precinct zones, by our count of Vicmap addresses, and Clayton has no tree protection overlay.
The state-wide canopy rule below doesn’t list the precinct zones, so the rules there differ: check VicPlan or ask Monash before removing a tree. Some public trees are heritage-listed, such as the oaks and peppercorns on Clayton Road.
Outside the precinct zones, a state-wide rule applies. In most residential zones (not Low Density Residential), Clause 52.37 needs a permit to remove, destroy or lop a canopy tree at least 5 m tall with a canopy averaging at least 4 m across. On a block with a house, that narrows to trees with any part of the trunk within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. A dead tree is exempt. Look up your block on VicPlan, or ask the council, before you cut.
Drains, soil and flash flooding
No open creek runs through Clayton: its stormwater runs in piped drains, and the SES names Carinish Road, between Colin Road and Flora Road, as a flash-flood spot.
About 7% of Clayton’s homes are in the overland-flooding overlay, and about 11% of addresses are on former industrial land under the Environmental Audit Overlay, by our count. Soil dug out there may need testing before a tip will take it: that’s our caution, not a council rule. A soil skip is for clean soil, so if yours may need testing, tell your chosen supplier before booking.

Common questions
Can the skip go on a shared townhouse driveway?
Yes, if everyone who uses the driveway can still get in and out. Agree the spot with your neighbours, or the owners corporation if there is one, before the delivery day, and tell us how wide the driveway is. On your own land, no council permit is needed.
