The Watts River runs past Healesville’s town centre and joins the Yarra in Coldstream, on the river flats. Eastern Skip Hire collects enquiries about skip hire to both Yarra Valley towns, from the Coldstream estate and the farms on the flats to Healesville’s town streets and bush blocks.
Healesville grew up on the coach road to the Woods Point goldfields and was surveyed as a town in 1864. Coldstream is dairy and vineyard country beside Yering, where William Ryrie planted the district’s first vineyard in 1838.
A skip on the street in the Yarra Valley
On your driveway, no permit is needed. On the road or nature strip, the Shire of Yarra Ranges wants a permit first, and the skip company applies for it, so the skip supplier arranges it when the skip can’t fit on your property.
- Driveway first, if it’s safe
Yarra Ranges
Council will not approve a road permit where the skip can be placed safely on private property. A registered skip company applies.
Fee: $74.00 residential (up to 7 days), $150.00 building site (up to 3 months), $500.00 commercial (3 to 12 months), including GST
Every council’s rule side by side: skip bin permits in Melbourne’s east.
What council hard rubbish takes, and what it won’t: Yarra Ranges hard rubbish.
Getting a skip truck up the drive
About 40% of the roads Yarra Ranges Council manages are unsealed, by its 2025 Road Management Plan. Most homes in Healesville and Coldstream are on sealed streets, but the rural roads around both are often gravel.
- 40%of Yarra Ranges Council’s roads are unsealed (Road Management Plan, 2025)
- 26%of Healesville’s local road length is gravel, by our count of Vicmap roads
- 38%of Coldstream’s local road length is gravel, by our count
On a rural block, tell us the drive’s width, any low branches over it, the slope and where a truck can turn around. If your driveway crosses a roadside drain on a culvert, tell us: Yarra Ranges says vehicle crossings, culverts included, are the property owner’s to build and maintain.
Parts of Healesville sit on the Watts River floodplain, and the Yarra flats around Coldstream flood slowly. In the June 2021 flood, the Watts River peaked at 3.34 m at the Healesville gauge and River Street and Wilson Street flooded, the SES says.
Fire-season clean-ups
By our count of Vicmap addresses, every Healesville address is in the Bushfire Prone Area and 96% are in the Bushfire Management Overlay. In Coldstream it’s the farms, not the estate.
In 2025–26 the CFA’s fire danger period for the Yarra Ranges ran from 29 December to 30 March, so the clean-up window is the months before it. Yarra Ranges’ advice is to clear grass, leaves, bark and twigs from around the house, shed and garage, using the weekly green waste bin and the November–December bundled branch collection. Burning off is restricted and depends on your property’s category, so check Yarra Ranges’ burning-off page first. For a big clear-up, a green waste skip takes it in one go.
On Black Saturday in February 2009, a wind change spared Healesville a direct hit, but the fire burned in the Maroondah catchment for three weeks, the Healesville Community Emergency Group’s 2025 plan records.
Clearing trees and scrub: the permits
About half the homes in both towns are under Schedule 22 of Yarra Ranges’ Significant Landscape Overlay, by our count, which needs a permit for indigenous vegetation or a tree more than 0.16 m across at 1.3 m.
- Bushfire clearing (Clause 52.12): for a home built before 10 September 2009 in the Bushfire Prone Area, any vegetation within 10 m of it can be cleared without a planning permit, and any vegetation except trees within 30 m. In the Bushfire Management Overlay, that second rule reaches 50 m. Other building-date routes and conditions apply, so check with council before you cut.
- Farmland (Schedule 6, rolling hills and bushy agriculture): a permit is needed for native vegetation, or a tree more than 1.1 m round. Dead vegetation, and trees within 4 m of a lawful building, are exempt.
A state-wide rule applies on top of that. In most residential zones (not Low Density Residential), Clause 52.37 needs a permit to remove, destroy or lop a canopy tree at least 5 m tall with a canopy averaging at least 4 m across. On a block with a house, that narrows to trees with any part of the trunk within 6 m of the narrowest street frontage or 4.5 m of the rear boundary. A dead tree is exempt. Look up your block on VicPlan, or ask the council, before you cut.
Two towns, two kinds of job
Healesville is a settled country town; Coldstream is a young family estate in the middle of farmland, by the 2021 Census.
- 46is Healesville’s median age (Victoria: 38)
- 98.9%of Coldstream’s homes are separate houses (Victoria: 73.4%)
- 49.5%of Coldstream homes have a mortgage (Victoria: 36.1%)
In Healesville, four in ten homes are owned outright: shed and garden clear-outs and downsizing are the usual jobs. In Coldstream, renovations and garage clear-outs on the estate sit beside farm and vineyard clean-ups on the flats.

Common questions
Which tip is nearer Healesville: Coldstream or Wesburn?
Coldstream, for most of the town: the Coldstream Transfer Station is about 14 km from Healesville and the Wesburn Transfer Station about 17.5 km, both in a straight line, by our measure. Wesburn is closed Tuesday to Thursday, and for a few rural blocks on Healesville’s eastern edge it may be the shorter drive.
